What is Thaipusam?

Thaipusam is a Hindu festival of the Tamil community held at the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai, in January or February, in honour of the god Murugan. It recalls the day his mother Parvati gave him a vel, a divine spear, to defeat the demon Soorapadman. Devotees fast and pray, then carry kavadi, decorated frames, or pots of milk on pilgrimages, some with their skin pierced by hooks and skewers; the largest gathering is at the Batu Caves near Kuala Lumpur, where hundreds of thousands climb 272 steps to the shrine.
