What is Sweetest Day?
Sweetest Day, observed on the third Saturday of October, was launched in 1921 by Cleveland philanthropist Herbert Birch Kingston. Originally conceived as a day to bring sweets and small gifts to orphans, the poor, and the shut-ins, it has grown into a regional celebration of kindness — a kind of second Valentine's Day observed mainly in the Great Lakes and Northeast.
