What is Stir-Up Sunday?
Stir-Up Sunday is the last Sunday before Advent, the traditional day in Britain for making the Christmas pudding. Its name comes from the Book of Common Prayer, whose prayer for that Sunday begins Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord. By Victorian custom each member of the family stirs the mixture from east to west, in honour of the Wise Men, and makes a secret wish, sometimes adding a silver coin for luck, so the pudding can mature for weeks before Christmas Day.
