What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth and most sacred month of the Islamic lunar calendar, observed by nearly two billion Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting from dawn to sunset. Rooted in 610 CE, when the Prophet Muhammad is believed to have received the Quran from the angel Gabriel on Laylat al-Qadr, the month gathers families for suhoor before sunrise and iftar after Maghrib, and is read cover-to-cover in many mosques. Dates shift each year because the Islamic calendar follows the moon; crescent-and-star lanterns light streets from Jakarta to Casablanca.
