What is Purim?
Purim, celebrated on the 14th of Adar (or Adar II in a leap year), commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman's plot to destroy them, as told in the Book of Esther. Congregations read the Megillah, dress in costumes, exchange food gifts (mishloach manot), give charity to the poor (matanot la'evyonim), and eat hamantaschen, three-cornered pastries filled with poppy seed or fruit jam.
