What is Pongal?

Pongal is a four-day harvest festival celebrated by Tamils in mid-January, in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and the diaspora, thanking the Sun, nature and cattle for the harvest. Its name comes from the sweet rice dish boiled in new clay pots with milk and jaggery until it overflows, a sign of abundance, as people cry Pongalo Pongal. The days include Bhogi, when old things are discarded, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal honouring cattle with painted horns, and Kaanum Pongal for family outings, and homes are decorated with kolam patterns.
