What is Plough Monday?
Plough Monday, the first Monday after Epiphany, traditionally marked the return to work in the fields after the Christmas season in England. Farm labourers dragged a decorated plough from house to house, sometimes in costume, asking for money, food or drink, and threatening in jest to plough up the doorstep of anyone who refused. The custom included plough plays and Molly dancing, and it has been revived in parts of England, especially East Anglia, with blessings of the plough in churches.
