What is Phuket Vegetarian Festival?
The Phuket Vegetarian Festival — known locally as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival — transforms Phuket, Thailand into a vibrant hub of devotion each year in early October. Believed to have begun in the early 19th century when a Chinese opera troupe recovered from illness after adopting a strict vegetarian diet and honoring the Nine Emperor Gods, the festival is now famous for daily processions, fire-walking, body-piercing rituals, and streets filled with yellow-flagged vegetarian stalls. Tens of thousands of participants and tourists gather to share in the spiritual purification and the food.
