What is Fire Prevention Week?
Fire Prevention Week is observed annually in the United States during the week containing October 9, commemorating the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Sponsored since 1922 by the National Fire Protection Association and proclaimed a national observance by President Calvin Coolidge in 1925, the week teaches families and communities how to prevent fires and respond safely if one starts. Schools lead the charge with classroom drills and educational programs every fall.
