What is Passover (Pesach)?
Passover, or Pesach, begins on the 15th of Nisan and lasts seven days (eight in the diaspora). It commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt as told in the Book of Exodus. Families gather for the Seder on the first two nights, reading the Haggadah, eating matzah and avoiding leavened products (chametz). The holiday ends with the counting of the Omer toward Shavuot.
