What is National Tulip Day?
National Tulip Day in the Netherlands, on the third Saturday of January, opens the Dutch tulip season with a free picking garden of around 200,000 tulips on Dam Square in Amsterdam. Organised by Dutch tulip growers since 2012, it lets visitors walk in and pick their own bouquet for free. Tulips arrived in the Netherlands from the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, sparked the famous tulip mania of the 1630s, and the country now grows billions of bulbs every year.
