National Rescue Dog Day
Rescue is a second chance.

When is National Rescue Dog Day?
Every year on May 20.
What is National Rescue Dog Day?
National Rescue Dog Day, observed on May 20, celebrates the more than 2 million dogs adopted from U.S. shelters every year and the shelters, foster families, trainers, veterinarians and volunteers who made those second chances possible. Founded in 2018 by children's-book author and Tails that Teach director Lisa Wiehebrink, the day pushes back on the idea that 'rescue' describes a particular kind of dog: shelters are full of every shape, size, age and breed, and what unites them is the simple fact that someone stepped in to keep them safe. The day encourages adoption and fostering, of course, but also donations, social-media shares of adoptable dogs, and the quieter work of helping a newly adopted dog decompress — because the celebration is not just the happy adoption photo, it is the months of patience and training that follow.
