What is National Heroes Day?
The Philippines' National Heroes Day falls on the last Monday in August, marking the 1896 Cry of Pugad Lawin that launched the Philippine Revolution against the Spanish Empire. The day honours figures like Andres Bonifacio, who founded the Katipunan, and Apolinario Mabini, the brilliant paralysed strategist known as the Sublime Paralytic, alongside every Filipino who served and sacrificed for the nation. Observed since 1931 with parades, wreath-layings, fireworks, and quiet reflection, the modern celebration was moved to its long-weekend date in 2007. Other countries honour their own heroes on different dates — Zimbabwe remembers its Liberation War heroes on the second Monday of August, Indonesia on 10 November, the Cayman Islands on the fourth Monday in January.
