What is Mawlid al-Nabi (Prophet's Birthday)?
Mevlid Kandili celebrates the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad on the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal. In Turkey it is a deeply observed holy night. The tradition of the Mevlid — a poem praising the Prophet written by Süleyman Çelebi in 1409 — is recited in mosques across the country. Families gather, special prayers are held, and minarets are illuminated.
