What is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, honours the men and women who died while serving in the United States armed forces. It began after the Civil War as Decoration Day, when families laid flowers on soldiers' graves, and became a federal holiday in 1971. Americans visit cemeteries and memorials, fly the flag at half-staff until noon, and pause for the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m.
