What is Makha Bucha Day?
Makha Bucha Day is one of the most sacred days in the Buddhist calendar, observed on the full moon of the third lunar month to mark the day when 1,250 of the Buddha's enlightened disciples spontaneously gathered at the Veluvana Bamboo Grove in India — nine months after his enlightenment — without any prior arrangement. In Thailand it is a national holiday marked by candlelit processions around the temple, in Cambodia by offerings at the pagoda, and across Theravada Buddhist Southeast Asia by alcohol-free observance, mindful speech and quiet reflection. Dates shift each year with the lunar calendar.
