What is Makar Sankranti?
Makar Sankranti, usually on January 14 or 15, marks the sun's entry into the sign of Makara (Capricorn) in the Hindu calendar and the start of its northward journey, Uttarayana, bringing longer days. Unlike most Hindu festivals, it follows the solar calendar, so its date barely changes from year to year. It is celebrated across India and Nepal under many names, with holy dips in rivers such as the Ganges, sweets made of sesame and jaggery, bonfires, and kite flying that fills the skies of Gujarat and Rajasthan.
