What is Late Summer Bank Holiday?
The Late Summer Bank Holiday (also called the August Bank Holiday) falls on the last Monday in August in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, marking the third three-day weekend British workers earn each summer. Introduced by the Bank Holidays Act of 1871 to improve conditions for industrial workers, it was moved to the last Monday of August in 1971's Banking and Financial Dealings Act so families could enjoy a long weekend. The day sees millions take short holidays, fire up barbecues for one of the last outdoor meals of the season, head to Brighton or Blackpool, and crowd the Notting Hill Carnival.
