What is Isra and Mi'raj?
Isra and Mi'raj, observed on the 27th of Rajab in the Islamic calendar, commemorates two parts of one miraculous night in the life of the Prophet Muhammad. In the Isra he travelled from Mecca to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, and in the Mi'raj he ascended through the heavens, where, according to tradition, the five daily prayers were given. Muslims mark the night with extra prayers, Quran recitation and talks about its meaning, and in some countries it is a public holiday.
