What is International AIDS Candlelight Memorial?
The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, held the third Sunday of May, is the world's longest-running grassroots HIV awareness event, bringing people together in homes, parks and city squares to honor the lives lost to AIDS and to stand with those living with HIV today. The memorial began in 1983 in San Francisco and New York, when a small group of friends living with HIV created a quiet space to mourn during a time when grief was hidden, fear was widespread and public understanding lagged behind reality. Today the Global Network of People Living with HIV leads the observance worldwide, balancing remembrance with practical action: education, anti-stigma advocacy, testing access and support for the caregivers, researchers and friends who have carried communities through four decades of the epidemic.
