What is Hari Raya Haji?
Hari Raya Haji, also known as Eid al-Adha, is one of the two principal festivals of the Muslim world, observed on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah — the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The day commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, with the animal he had prepared for slaughter replaced at the last moment by a ram; in the world's Muslim communities the story is honored through the ritual of Qurban, the sacrifice of a sheep, goat, cow or camel whose meat is divided into thirds for family, friends and those in need. Eid al-Adha also coincides with the end of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca that every able Muslim is encouraged to perform once in a lifetime, so the day arrives each year wrapped in prayer, family gatherings, new clothes and plates of rendang, biryani and other regional feast food shared across neighborhoods.
