What is Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti?
Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti celebrates the birth of the tenth Sikh Guru, born in Patna in 1666, and its date follows the lunar calendar, usually falling in December or January. In 1699 he founded the Khalsa, the community of initiated Sikhs, giving it the five articles of faith, and before his death in 1708 he declared the scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, to be the eternal Guru. Sikhs mark the day with prayers and hymn singing at gurdwaras, processions called nagar kirtan, and langar, the free community kitchen open to all.
