What is Feast of the Holy Child?

The Feast of the Santo Niño, the Holy Child Jesus, is celebrated on the third Sunday of January in the Philippines, most famously in Cebu City with the Sinulog festival. It honours a small statue of the Christ Child that Ferdinand Magellan's expedition gave to the wife of a local ruler, Rajah Humabon, at her baptism in 1521, and which Spanish soldiers found again in 1565. Millions join the processions, masses and the Sinulog street dance, a rhythmic two-steps-forward, one-step-back movement performed in colourful costumes to drumbeats.
