What is Feast of Saint James?

The Feast of Saint James, celebrated on July 25, honors James the Great, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and the patron saint of Spain. According to tradition, James was the first apostle to be martyred, beheaded by Herod Agrippa around 44 AD, and his relics are believed to rest at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The feast is especially significant in Galicia, where Santiago de Compostela serves as the destination of the famous Camino pilgrimage route. Thousands of pilgrims complete the Camino each year, arriving at the cathedral to pay their respects on this holy day.
