What is Elephant Round-Up in Surin?
The Surin Elephant Round-Up is held each November in Surin province in northeastern Thailand, a region long known for its elephant-keeping Kuy people. Since 1960 the festival has brought hundreds of elephants and their mahouts into town for parades, a huge fruit buffet for the elephants and re-enactments of historic battles. It celebrates the centuries-old bond between the Kuy and their elephants, alongside growing debate about how captive elephants should be cared for.
