What is Diwali / Deepavali?
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains in India and around the world, and falls in October or November with the new moon of the month of Kartika. For many Hindus it marks Rama's return to Ayodhya and honours Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity; Sikhs mark Bandi Chhor Divas and Jains the nirvana of Mahavira. Families clean and light their homes with oil lamps, draw rangoli patterns, share sweets, wear new clothes and set off fireworks.
