What is Democracy and National Unity Day (Turkey)?
Democracy and National Unity Day commemorates the defeat of the coup attempt on the night of July 15–16, 2016. Citizens took to the streets in response to President Erdoğan's call, and the attempt was repelled by the early hours of July 16. The day became a public holiday in 2017 to honour those who lost their lives defending democracy and to remember the night Turkey resisted a military takeover.
