What is Columbus Day?
Columbus Day, on the second Monday of October, marks Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492. First celebrated by Italian American communities in the 19th century, it became a federal holiday in 1937 and remains a day of pride in Italian American heritage. Parades such as New York's Columbus Day Parade fill the streets, while many places also observe Indigenous Peoples' Day on the same date.
