What is Chinese New Year (Spring Festival)?
Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional holiday in China and is celebrated by Chinese communities around the world. It begins on the new moon of the first month of the lunar calendar, between January 21 and February 20, and each year is linked to one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac; in 2024 UNESCO added its customs to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Hundreds of millions travel home for the reunion dinner on New Year's Eve, and the celebrations bring red envelopes of money, firecrackers, lion and dragon dances, and end on the fifteenth day with the Lantern Festival.
