What is Carnaval de Barranquilla?
The Carnival of Barranquilla, held in the four days before Ash Wednesday, is Colombia's biggest folk festival and was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003. It blends African, Indigenous and European traditions in dances such as the cumbia, the congo and the mapalé, and in characters like the long-nosed Marimonda and the Torito. Its opening highlight, the Battle of Flowers, has paraded through the city since 1903, followed by days of floats, music, masks and street dancing.
