What is Bloco da Lama?

Bloco da Lama is a carnival tradition in Paraty, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro state in Brazil, where revellers cover themselves from head to toe in dark mud. It began in the 1980s, when a group of local young people smeared themselves with mud from the mangroves at Jabaquara beach and paraded through town, and it has grown into one of the town's best-known carnival events. On the day, thousands of mud-caked participants march through the streets to drums and samba, many carrying bones, branches or homemade props, before washing it all off in the sea.
