What is Berat Kandili?
Berat Kandili is observed on the night before the 15th of Sha'ban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar, about two weeks before Ramadan begins. Known elsewhere as Shab-e-Barat or Laylat al-Bara'ah, it is regarded as a night of forgiveness, when, according to tradition, God's mercy is especially near and the coming year's destinies are recorded. In Türkiye it is one of the five kandil nights, when mosques are lit, families pray and read the Quran, visit the graves of loved ones and exchange kandil greetings.
