What is World Leprosy Day?
World Leprosy Day is held on the last Sunday of January, a date chosen in 1954 by the French journalist and humanitarian Raoul Follereau to fall close to the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's death, since Gandhi had cared for people with leprosy. Leprosy, or Hansen's disease, is caused by a slow-growing bacterium and is fully curable with multidrug therapy, recommended by the World Health Organization since 1981 and provided free of charge. Yet fear and discrimination still keep many people from seeking treatment, so the day is marked with awareness campaigns, screening drives and calls to end laws and attitudes that exclude those affected.
