What is Ukraine Defenders Day?
Ukraine Defenders Day honors those who serve and have served in defense of Ukraine. Established in 2014 by President Petro Poroshenko and first observed on October 14, 2015, the day was moved to October 1 in 2023. It separates Ukrainian military commemorations from those of Russia and the former Soviet Union, paying respect to fallen defenders and to the veterans who have fought for the country's independence.
