What is International Day for People of African Descent?
The International Day for People of African Descent was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2020 and first observed in 2021. It rests on three principles — recognition, justice, and development — and asks the world to confront the centuries of injustice that people of African descent have endured: the Transatlantic slave trade, colonial rule, and the ongoing discrimination and systemic racism that shape justice systems today. The day invites joining community events, reading books and watching documentaries about the African diaspora, standing up against inequity, and supporting organisations working on education and legal aid.
