What is Yom HaZikaron?
Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial Day, is observed on the 4th of Iyyar, the day before Yom Ha'atzmaut. It honours the more than 24,000 soldiers and security personnel killed in the line of duty since 1860, as well as civilian victims of terrorism. A one-minute siren sounds at 20:00; memorial ceremonies are held at military cemeteries, and flags are lowered to half-mast.
