What is National POW/MIA Recognition Day?
National POW/MIA Recognition Day, on the third Friday of September, honours Americans who were held as prisoners of war and those still missing in action. More than 81,000 US service members remain unaccounted for from World War II to the present, and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency still works to bring them home. The black POW/MIA flag flies over the White House, the Capitol and military installations, and ceremonies close with the pledge "You are not forgotten."
