What is NASA's Day of Remembrance?
NASA's Day of Remembrance, held on the last Thursday of January, honours the astronauts who died in the Apollo 1 fire in 1967, the Challenger explosion in 1986 and the loss of Columbia in 2003. The three tragedies all happened in the last week of January or the first days of February, which is why the agency chose this time of year. NASA flags fly at half-staff, wreaths are laid at Arlington National Cemetery and at NASA centres, and employees pause to reflect on the lessons for safety in spaceflight.
