Leif Erikson Day
Sail beyond the edge of the map.
When is Leif Erikson Day?
Every year on October 9.
What is Leif Erikson Day?
Leif Erikson Day on October 9 honours the Norse explorer who reached North America around the year 1000, nearly five centuries before Columbus. Erikson, born in Iceland, landed at a place the sagas call Vinland, and the Norse site found at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland confirms such voyages. The date marks the arrival of the ship Restauration in New York in 1825, which began organised Norwegian immigration, and Nordic American communities celebrate with festivals and flags.
