What is National Day of Mourning?

The National Day of Mourning has been held on US Thanksgiving Day since 1970, organised by the United American Indians of New England on Cole's Hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It began after the Wampanoag leader Wamsutta Frank James was barred from giving a speech about the impact of colonisation at the 350th anniversary of the Pilgrims' landing. Participants gather to remember the violence, land loss and broken treaties Native peoples have endured, and to speak about Indigenous rights today.
