What is National Day of Prayer?

The National Day of Prayer, held on the first Thursday of May, invites Americans of all faiths to pray or reflect for the nation. Congress created it in 1952, and a 1988 law fixed the date and requires the President to proclaim it each year. Gatherings take place at the Capitol, in city halls, churches, synagogues and mosques, and in homes across the country.
