What is Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day?
Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day, on the last Sunday of September, honours the families of service members who died in the line of duty. The gold star comes from the service flags families hung in their windows during World War I, when a blue star was replaced with a gold one after a loss. Congress created the day in 1936, and communities hold ceremonies, lay wreaths and fly the flag in their honour.
