What is Daytona Pole Day?
Daytona Pole Day, held each February on the Sunday before the Daytona 500, decides who starts from the front of NASCAR's biggest race. Drivers take single-lap qualifying runs around the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway, chasing the pole position that Bill France Sr. made an elevated position from when he opened the superspeedway in 1959. The day's biggest moments include Bill Elliott's 210.364 mph qualifying record in 1987 and Danica Patrick becoming the first woman to win a Daytona 500 pole in 2013.
